Purple Lamborghini : The Joker & Harley Quinn of Suicide Squad

Warning: This post contains spoilers to the recent film Suicide Squad

Purple Lamborghini by Jason A. Das

Ever since I heard that Suicide Squad was filming in Toronto, I was looking forward to seeing the movie in theatres. I tried to keep my expectations in check and not get too hyped for the movie. However its hard to resist when you see footage online of the Batmobile chasing a purple Lamborghini down Yonge Street. Or when you go downtown for some event only to walk by an area closed off to see them filming a scene for the movie.

Ever since seeing earlier footage of the Batmobile chasing the so-called “Jokermobile”, I wanted to capture that image of the Joker and Harley Quinn on that date night chase. So normally when I start painting, I’m loading up Spotify 1st before Photoshop to get me in that mode. I saw that Spotify was previewing the movie soundtrack. One of the tracks titled “Purple Lamborghini” by Skrillex and Rick Ross got me hooked instantly. For a while that song was on loop, also Twenty One Pilot’s “Heathens”. I started downing the illustration in a full greyscale painting, similar to my Star Trek Captains piece. However this time instead of painting realistic colors, I went with a gradient map overlay each area. So with the Jared Leto’s Joker I went with green, purple, and white. For Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn I went for the colors from her ponytails (pink, white, blue) over a base of deep red. The Lamborghini is purple with tints of green and white. I love how it all turned out.

Now getting back to my thoughts on the movie Suicide Squad; It was ok, but I still was disappointed with a lot of parts.

  1. The introduction was a good start to Belle Reeve prison of inmates. The primary focus was primarily on Deadshot and Harley Quinn. The 2nd act with the attack mission inside the city was disappointing action (“hacking and shooting blob soldiers”). The 3rd act with the final battle against Enchantress was odd and the saving mission of Amanda Waller was was confusing.
  2. Deadshot – Will Smith was fine, not over exuberant like past performances. He kept it in check was pretty much the leader of the Suicide Squad.
  3. Harley Quinn – Lots of attention paid to her, but not enough of her origin explored with her relationship the Joker. Margot Robbie was good with what she had to work with. I guess the solo movie will give her room to explore the character more.
  4. The Joker – Jared Leto’s gangster take on the role was great. Except his role was very limited to what the trailers were promising. I would like him to get a chance again to play the role again, maybe in a solo Batman film.
  5. Killer Croc – Great makeup effects but the voice and use of Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje was literally wasted. I thought he was gonna be a more violent take on The Hulk.
  6. Slipknot – Pointless.
  7. Rick Flagg – Pretty much the babysitter of the Squad. However he rarely asserted himself to keep things in check. The relationship with Enchantress didn’t work for me. Joel Kinnaman I liked in The Killing, is wasted again just like in Robocop.
  8. The Enchantress – The special effects, costume and makeup effects were good. The acting was pretty much weak and nothing for Cara Delevingne to do with either June Moon vs Enchantress. Not a good lead villain.
  9. Diablo – Pretty much wasted throughout the film, until he starts talking in the bar about his past. Then he dies off in sacrifcing his life against Incubus (who? Oh the secondary villain).
  10. Captain Boomerang – Not much to do, only to suffice the need to pop in a Flash cameo of Ezra Miller. Which you’ll see in Justice League.
  11. Katana – You give her a sword and she does hardly nothing with it. You want to see a better portrayal of Katana watch CW’s Arrow with Rila Fukushima
  12. Amanda Waller – Viola Davis did a great job. I can see her a constant character used between DC movies if A.R.G.U.S is referred to. How she was used in Suicide Squad was questionable at times.

I’m not sure if another Suicide Squad movie will get made. I’ve been told I should watch the animated movie Batman: Assault of Arkham, as it’s a good use of the Suicide Squad. If another sequel happens, I feel it’ll follow the same problems like the Transformers movies. Make lots of money, but poorly directly and written and just mindless action.
