On February 14, 2016, the National Basketball Association (NBA) will host it’s All-Star Game for the 1st time outside the United States. The city of Toronto, Canada, home of the only Canadian team, the Toronto Raptors will be hosting the All-Star weekend festivities.
This year the Raptors have 2 All-Stars representing for the Eastern Conference with guards Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan. Both players have done amazing this year. Particularly Kyle Lowry who in past seasons was somewhat out of shape. This week on ESPN’s The Dan Le Batard Show, Kyle and DeMar shared an old story of going out to McDonald’s at 3 a.m. for a McFlurry run.
The 1st thing that popped into my head after hearing this story was the movie Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle. I decided to pay homage to the film and give Kyle and DeMar a possible future film pitch.
It got me thinking, if the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has a film studio deal with FOX, would the NBA consider a similar venture? There are many players in the NBA who have done acting in the past. Predominately basketball playing roles. There was Michael Jordan in Space Jam, Shaquille O’Neal in Blue Chips, Kazaam, and Steel. He’s now re-releasing his video game Shaq Fu, that could be something? Recently LeBron James just did the comedy Trainwreck with Amy Schumer and Bill Hader. Now there’s rumours of a possible Space Jam 2 in the works with LeBron. I’m not saying the NBA needs to do big tent pole big budget movies for all it’s stars. However possibly web short films or direct to videos as an extension of the brand to showcase their players. Besides if TNT is promoting upcoming games like this, why not capitalize on the synergy these players have?
