I first heard Prince back in 1989. It was the summer of Batman. I went with my family to go see the movie starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson. The hype for the movie was enormous. Pretty much everyone had that new Batman logo t-shirt on waiting in line. When we finally sat down, the title credits played the crowd cheered. The crowd cheered louder when it said “Music by Prince”.
I wasn’t familiar with Prince at the time as everyone else. It wasn’t until a couple of days after seeing the movie; I saw the music video for “Batdance” on Muchmusic. I was hooked immediately. That song along with “Party Man” became my introduction to Prince. From there I worked backwards and discovered his past music over the years. I learned about his album Purple Rain, but at the time I didn’t know it was a movie as well. I liked listening to “When Doves Cry” and then followed by “1999”, the go to song for any New Years Eve party.
That was pretty much my experience with Prince. I would like to go back to and listen to more of Prince’s previous work. It’s just a shame that he won’t be making new stuff. Whether he was making new music on his own terms, helping communities and charities in his own way, he left us too soon. There was so much more for him to give. In a way this me giving thanks to Prince with this piece.
