Another throwback to some advertising assignments. This one was a focus on consumer products. The difference this time it was a group assignment. We as a group decided to tackle the newest addition to the growing electronic sector at the time; DVD players. One of the biggest companies in the home electronics business was Sony. Our goal was to market the DVD player to an older generation to make the switch from VHS cassette to the fresh DVD format.
We decided to incorporate characters and lines from classic films. It was also our goal to focus on prestigious films that were previously released on home video, would value from now being available on DVD format. The movie quotes were incorporated into the copy writing and well as our tag lines. We focused on 3 iconic films, The Wizard of Oz, The Godfather, and The Ten Commandments. At the same time we came up with a tag line for Sony for this campaign; “So Real”, As always I liked presenting the TV spot storyboard because I got to do sound effects or narrate a scene. The toughest element was manipulating the cast from The Wizard of Oz to sit on a couch. The idea was to create a 2 page magazine spread in widescreen format. The newsprint ad was a hand drawn illustration by me, of an older gentleman starting at the picture quality of Marlon Brando in a scene from The Godfather.
DVD players were relatively were they same in design, a rectangular box with a small disc drive. We introduced new terminology that our audience would need to get use to when it came to DVD players. Things like DTS, Dolby Surround, video quality, special features, widescreen, and many others. This was definitely a fun project for our group to work on.
