Da Fossilz

The idea of Da Fossilz came about this year during some spare time and a Covid-19 outbreak I wanted to create something for kids and parents looking for activities to do. Colouring books have become a great source for inspiring creativity and as well reducing stress and anxiety among people.

When I saw people posting their colouring activities on social media, I saw mostly dragons and unicorns. There’s nothing wrong with that, but I wanted to switch it up. So I went about creating my own characters which were inspired by some of the things I was doing during my Covid isolation.

I was listening to a lot of audiobooks. One, in particular, was “Chuck D Presents This Day in Rap and Hip-Hop History”. It was great to feel some nostalgia and learn the history of some of my favourite songs of the past. This lead to me listening and supporting a flux of DJs performing live jam sessions on Twitch. Listening to the music; fueled this fusion for blending hip hop culture and dinosaurs.

Who doesn’t like dinosaurs? So I just began doodling these characters late at night and this is the outcome of that work. Each member of the Da Fossilz embodied an element of hip-hop. The young phenomenal M.C., the hard-voiced veteran storyteller, the female pioneers, the evolution of dance, the beat-makers and producers, to the soul and R&B hooks, and graffiti art.
