I’m at a lost for words. When I originally saw the news , I didn’t believe it. However it was true. We lost a voice for many people. When I first heard Linkin Park in college it was the single “One Step Closer” from Hybrid Theory. Followed by Papercut, In The End. It was really Meteora that really propelled my love for them. Every track from “Somewhere I Belong” “Faint” “Numb”. Some people thought the fad of raprock would fade with groups like Limp Bizkit, Korn, Rage Against The Machine, Pappa Roach. In the end it doesn’t really matter.
The sound of Linkin Park kept changing. The mashup album Collision Course of Linkin Park with Jay-Z is so well done. “Numb/Encore” was 1 of my favorite tracks. Even the newer stuff featured on the Transformers movies, to EA’s reboot of Medal of Honor video game series. Of course a few hit and missed, but the band was constant. Listening to the lyrics of Chester vs. the raps by Mike Shinoda it was a fine balancing act. No other group came close to pulling that off.
Chester battled his demons and stepped in for friends he admired for their music like Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots, or doing a duet with Chris Cornell of Soundgarden. Both of them we lost too soon.
With the release of their newest album “One More Light” I noticed this time the negativity online was really amplified this time. It was so over the top with the comments. I get it, you don’t like this album or song, but don’t take that away to the others who like this version of LP. Whether it’s long time fans or first timers listening. Listen and love what you want. Don’t run people into the ground especially artists. They’re trying to express something in the art form they know best. In Chester’s case it was music. I really though I’d be listening to Linkin Park for the rest of my life until they decided to hang up and retire and do the farewell tour, playing their classic hits. I dunno what the future holds for Mike, Joe, Rob, Brad and Dave. I’m keeping them as well as Chester’s family in my thoughts tonight.
Another important thing is the stigma around mental illness. If you’re feeling depressed and just overwhelmed with something that’s eating at your mind, and even contemplating suicidal thoughts, please talk to someone. Whether it’s a friend or family member. I’ve had to be the one to listen on certain occasions that i hope changed the outcome in someone’s life. Just take the time to listen, you’re not gonna have all the answers on the spot. Keep the dialogue open. You’re never alone out there.
